Dad/Grandpa update from 11/13/10

Craig went down to work on the house today.  I am not sure who else came to help him but I really appreciate all that you were able to do.  I was very sick Saturday so Susan and I were not able to make it down this time.  I know several of you were involved with the church's World Wide Training.

Craig called me to let me know that they were able to finish all of the odd projects in the house today. Next week we need to work on fixing the sheetrock in the garage and then finish cleaning everything inside to make it all look good and complete.

There is still plenty of things to do if you are at all available to come help.  We might be able to get everything finished up with one more day, we will just have to see what we can get done.

I want to thank everyone for all of the time and energy that you have put in.  We could not have done this without you.  We just need a little more time to have this project finally completed.

Next Week ... To Do ...

Scott, Craig, Linda, Jared, Susan, Allison, Jill, Moi, Rosemary, and Oscar all came down to work on the house.  As you can see from the list from the previous post there was a long list of things that we needed to get done today.  We did not get everything done but those who came down were able to make some real progress with what we have left to finish.

While we were there working a Realtor came with a young couple to look at the house.  They looked around a while, asked some questions and then they were gone.  After they left we all talked about the visit and the house.  We decided that we all need to look at things from a different perspective.  We need to look at things from the perspective of the buyer.  Not just what needs to be finished but what is the potential buyer going to see and look at.  There is still tons of work that we need to complete before we can say we are finished.

Some of you ask why it is taking so long and, why do we still need to come and work, well here it is.  Mom and Dad always taught us that when you move out, that the house needs to be left clean and free of repairs.  This means that we need to make sure that everything is fixed and that we have cleaned everything so that it is ready for someone to come live in it whether we find a buyer for the house or not.  We still need help form everyone because a few people can not get everything finished.

Here is an example of why it is taking so long.  The windows all need to be cleaned extensively, this means that the windows all have to be taken out, the screens taken out and washed, the tracks, and the windows themselves.  The tracks that the windows sit is are just caked in mud, bugs, spiders, etc. so we have to scraped everything out of the window slides as well as the casings.  We then have to vacuum the window out and then wash out any of the leftovers.  Once the tracks are cleaned then we have to wash all of the windows inside and out, now remember that there are double windows in each room.  Jill and Moi washed the window in the family room this weekend, that is all they were able to do (thank you for getting this done) and they spent about 4 hours doing this.  One day Susan and I cleaned windows in the living room and both front bedrooms, it took us all day long that Saturday to wash 3 rooms of windows.  So, on a list of things to do when it says wash windows we are talking about several hours to just wash the windows and we still have a few more rooms to do this with.

 Things to do on 11/6/10

  1. Clean windows in family room - Finish

  13. Clean all carpets
  14. Replace banister on stairs
  15. Replace light fixtures

Most of us are not able to go down to work on October 30th, so the plan was that we would come back down on Saturday, November 6th.

I hope to see more of you on the 6th.
Have a safe and Happy Halloween!

Scott, Craig, Linda, Jared, Susan, Allison, Jill, Moi, Rosemary, and Oscar all came down to work on the house.  As you can see from the list below there was a long list of things that needs to be done but we made a good dent in the list on Saturday.  As you can see there is still tons of things that need to be done and there are a few new things we need to add to the list for next time.

Things to be done on 10/23/10

  15. Replace light switches Jared is working on this
  16. Clean Bathroom downstairs (vanity, toilet)
  17. Wash address and thermometer on front of house

  19. Grout brick - front door, and family room hearth
  20. Grout brick -  family room hearth
  21. Clean out coat closet
  22. Finish cleaning out the garage
  23. Misc. yard work - make it look good

Jill and Moi came down to help, we got them started on washing the family room windows.
Thank You!  Thank You!  Thank You!

Susan spent most of the morning scraping the paint off of the wall in the living room.
Yey, we are almost finished with this project!

We finished painting the kitchen.
The door needs one more coat and a couple of other things but this room is almost finished!

Jared spent most of the day replacing plug outlets, and light switches, to match the new white paint.
Wow!  This looks great, way to go little electrician.

Craig and Scott worked on the closet in the Master Bedroom, and got the molding frame around the door put in.  This is moving right along and should be ready to paint next time.

Linda and I spent the entire day painting, it is amazing how long it takes to paint but it looks great once we are done.  (Linda, I had to have at least one picture of you helping with everything down here.)

Rosemary spent the afternoon cleaning the window tracks in the kitchen.
(Thanks for everything, you always some and help cross several more things off the list.)

The master bath is painted and ready for the tub surround.  The closet is all framed and trimmed and ready to paint.  It is amazing what a difference there is here.

The windows are back in place and now they are just polishing th glass.  Is that a tree that I can see through the window now that it is clean?  This looks wonderful!

The master bedroom is all cleaned out and vacuumed and now it is ready to paint next time.  We just need to remove the fan, put down some plastic and we are ready to go.  Ready, set, paint!

We had to patch some holes by the closet.  Craig was adding another coat of paint to cover up the patches.

Jared also learned how to fill in the space between the ceiling and the crown molding today.  You are going to be earning all  kinds of new merit badges after this project.

After painting the ceiling in the kitchen we took the tape off and there were spots of paint between the ceiling and molding.  Susan was great enough to go back through with a knife and clean this all up.
It looks AWESOME!

Oscar helped add some more muscle to get this wall finished.  With a little more mud to cover the holes and smooth everything out this wall should be ready to paint.
I can't believe that this wall if finally, just about ready!

As you can see we did tons of work but there is still plenty to finish, and we can use your help.
Thank you to everyone who came to help, you are amazing.
We could not have done everything we did without your help!

We are planning to go back down to work on Saturday, November 6th.   Please check your schedules and make arrangements to come help get more done.

Anything you can give is less we have to do later.

Dad/Grandpa update from 10/9/10

Scott, Craig, Linda, Braden, Jared and Allison all came down today to work on more items in the house. Today we were able to work on some "finish" projects.

Scott worked on fixing several pieces of laminate on the kitchen counters and some electrical items through the house. He also was able to take the chest freezer from the garage today.

Craig was able to work in the bathrooms today, he put on all of the fixtures for the bath/shower.

It sure does look great, thank you everyone for such beautiful work (Kent, Craig, Braden, Scott).

Craig also worked in the Master Bath/Bedroom.  He sanded down all the mud to be ready to work on the walls.

He cleaned up the bedroom with tools and supplies, we should be ready to paint this room soon.

Jared has become quite a good electrician.  He has now changed all the outlets & light switches in two bedrooms and down the hallway.  Thanks Jared for taking on this job and getting them all replaced, they look great!

Linda, Braden, Jared and I all spent the day painting.  We were able to paint all of the hallway, finish the family room, the dining room & door, and the stairwell to the downstairs.

We were planning to finish the ceiling in the kitchen but we ran out of paint.  This will need to be completed next time.

Here are all of the areas that we finished today.

 Bathroom

Hallway

Dining Room / Doors

 Family Room

Stairwell

It is always amazing to see all that we can get done when we have more people to help.

Thank you everyone who came down to help, things are really looking GREAT!

We filled up Scott's truck again today with all of the scrap metal that was left in the garage and house.

We cleaned out all of the laundry room, it has never been this empty.

All building materials and tub are now out of the bathroom, it is all empty ans cleaned up.

The familyroom/kitchen downstairs is all cleaned up, we just need to go through and vacuum everything.

We cleaned up the garage.  There are several things still in the garage that people wanting.  We need to be getting these out as soon as possible.

We filled up the dumpster for the last time today.  After all summer this was the 5th dumpster we filled.  This one was half the size that we have had available all summer but we still filled it up to the top  Wow, it feels great to have all of this stuff cleaned up and gone.

Kent was able to come down this past week to finish all of the tile in the bathroom.  This really looks great, thanks for all your hard work.

Way to go everyone, we really got tons done today!!!

Scott, Susan, Kent, and Allison went down to work today.  We were able to get done some small odds and ends to prep jobs for later finish.  Scott helped take down several light fixtures as well as some other odd jobs.  Kent came down to work on putting up tile in the bathroom.  The tile is really looking good so far, thanks for your hard work.

We were able to paint the doors for all rooms down the hallway

Susan painted a primer coat on the trim in the dining room as well as all round the stairwell.

Susan also painted all of the trim down the hallway.

We took all of grandma's paintings home today, they are all at my house.  We need to set up a time in the next few months to divide things up.
